How to Brief an Influencer (The Right Way)

Bad campaigns start with bad briefs. Here's how to write an influencer campaign brief that reduces revisions, protects your brand, and gets content you can actually use.

You found the right creator. Their audience aligns. The engagement rate checks out. You pay the invoice. Then the content arrives and it's... off-brand. Too long. Missing the key message. Or just clearly shot in bad lighting on the wrong product. (Still in the discovery phase? Our guide on finding micro influencers for your brand covers how to vet creators before you reach out.)

Nine times out of ten, this isn't the creator's fault. It's the brief's fault.

A vague influencer brief produces vague content. A clear, specific influencer campaign brief gives creators everything they need to produce content that works — and it protects you legally and operationally when something goes sideways.

This guide covers exactly what goes into a good creator brief, why each element matters, and the mistakes that cause most campaign miscommunications.

Why Most Influencer Briefs Fail

Most influencer briefs fail for one of three reasons:

  1. 1They're too vague. "Just be authentic and mention our product naturally" is not a brief. It's a prayer.
  2. 2They're too controlling. A script-level brief that dictates every sentence produces stiff, inauthentic content that the audience ignores.
  3. 3They're missing critical details. No posting date, no mention of disclosure requirements, no clarity on who owns the content.

The sweet spot is a brief that gives the creator everything they need to understand the campaign objective and brand guidelines — without stripping away their creative voice. That's what actually converts.

Before you even open a brief template, make sure you've completed your pre-campaign groundwork. The Brand × Creator Collab Checklist (free download) covers the 15 things every brand should confirm before briefing a creator — from campaign goals and content pillars to creator vetting and usage rights.

What to Include in an Influencer Campaign Brief

1. Campaign Overview

Start with the "why". What is this campaign trying to achieve? New product launch awareness? Driving traffic to a sale? Building a content library for retargeting ads? Knowing the objective helps the creator make better creative decisions — without you having to spell out every detail.

2. Brand & Product Information

Don't assume the creator knows your brand deeply, even if they've used your product. Include:

  • A one-paragraph brand overview and positioning statement
  • The specific product(s) being featured — key benefits, unique selling points, how it fits into the creator's life
  • Brand voice guidelines — formal vs. casual, words to use, words to avoid
  • Visual guidelines — colours, logo usage, whether to show packaging or lifestyle shots

3. Deliverables — Be Specific

List exactly what you're commissioning. Not just "one Instagram post" but:

  • Platform (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube) and content format (Feed post, Reel, Story series, Shorts)
  • Minimum video length or image dimensions
  • Required caption length and whether a CTA is needed
  • Required hashtags, tags, and swipe-up/link-in-bio instructions
  • Number of allowed revisions and the approval process

4. Key Messages & Mandatories

List 2–3 key messages you want the audience to take away. These are outcomes, not scripts. Then separately list your "mandatories" — the non-negotiables: product mentions, disclosure language (#ad or #sponsored), any claims that require substantiation, and things that are strictly off-limits (competitor mentions, certain topics, etc.).

5. Timeline

Include every date that matters: draft due date, feedback deadline, approval deadline, and live date. Creators are running multiple campaigns simultaneously — give them clarity upfront rather than chasing them later.

Build in more time than you think you need. Same-week turnarounds on content reviews are a leading cause of brand-creator relationship breakdowns.

6. Content Rights & Usage

This is the section most brands forget and most creators care about the most. Be explicit about:

  • Whether you want usage rights to the content (ads, website, email campaigns)
  • Duration of the usage licence (30 days, 6 months, in perpetuity)
  • Exclusivity requirements — whether the creator is barred from working with competitors during or after the campaign

These should be reflected in the agreed rate. If you're asking for content rights and exclusivity, expect to pay a premium. Check your expected ROI before you commit →

The One Thing Good Creator Briefs Have in Common

The best campaign briefs — the ones that produce content brands actually repurpose and run as ads — all share one trait: they trust the creator.

They give clear guardrails but don't write the script. They explain the "why" behind key messages so the creator can deliver them naturally in their own voice. They treat the creator as a collaborator, not a vendor.

When you brief a creator well, the content they produce is better than anything you could have scripted. It's authentic because it's theirs — and that authenticity is exactly why influencer marketing works when it's done right.

Start with a structured template, fill in your campaign specifics, and share it with your creator at least two weeks before the content is due. That one habit will eliminate the majority of influencer campaign problems before they start. If you also need a rate card or media kit to share with creators, the Creator Toolkit bundle has everything in one place.
