How Influencer ROI Is Calculated
Influencer campaign ROI starts with reach — the total number of people who could see your content, which is simply the number of influencers multiplied by their average follower count. From there, the engagement rate tells you what fraction of that audience is actually paying attention. Multiply reach by engagement rate and you get estimated engagements — the pool of people who liked, commented, or otherwise interacted with the post.
Conversions come next. Not every engaged person buys, so the conversion rate captures the realistic slice of engaged viewers who turn into customers. Multiply engagements by conversion rate to get estimated sales, then multiply by your product price to get estimated revenue. ROI is then ((revenue − cost) ÷ cost) × 100 — the same formula used in any marketing channel. A positive number means you earned more than you spent. The higher above zero, the better. Two secondary metrics — cost per engagement (CPE) and break-even conversions — help you benchmark efficiency and set expectations before committing budget.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's a good ROI for influencer marketing?
200–500% is considered strong for micro and nano campaigns. In practice, focus on CPE first — it tells you how efficiently you're buying attention. Revenue ROI is a strong secondary metric, but CPE is your real signal for whether a creator tier is worth the investment.
How do I find the right influencer for my budget?
Brief them clearly — a vague outreach gets ignored. Start small: 2–3 nano influencers at $100–$200 each is an extremely low-risk test. Once you see which creative angle and audience segment converts, scale to micro influencers with the same brief.
Is engagement rate or follower count more important?
Engagement rate, almost always. A 50K-follower creator with 5% ER generates 2,500 engaged people per post. A 500K-follower creator with 0.5% ER generates the same 2,500 — but costs 5–10× more. Nano and micro influencers with strong engagement rates deliver far better CPE for most brand budgets.
What should a campaign brief include?
At minimum: campaign objective, deliverables (format, quantity, platform), key messages, brand mandatories, posting timeline, usage rights, and performance expectations. A vague brief is the single biggest cause of disappointing influencer content. See the Campaign Brief Template for a complete, ready-to-use checklist.
